2007 Report to Citizens: Healthy Families

Healthy kids learn more in school. Healthy adults pay less for health care, contribute to building vibrant communities and live happier, more productive lives.

Listening to citizens

  • Having health care coverage is important, but that is not enough. Good health care also means affordable coverage and access to the medical services we all need.

Taking action

  • Funded health care coverage for 84,000 more kids.
  • Created a free discount prescription drug program that helped 74,000+ residents afford medications.

Getting results

  • Saved $46 million by using bulk purchasing programs for common prescriptions, and will save another $21 million next year.
  • We are the 12th healthiest state in the nation according to the United Health Foundation.

Challenges

  • An unacceptable number of Washingtonians are still without health care coverage, including 73,000 children.
  • Health care is a national crisis. Washington State residents — especially low income and rural residents — face challenges to getting quality, affordable health care.
