Washington families should be safe and secure in their homes and communities. In 2007, we heard from citizens across the state that their highest public safety priorities are reducing the crime rate, reducing repeat criminal offenses, and ensuring emergency responders can communicate during disasters.

What is state government’s role?

We can’t prevent catastrophes and disasters – natural or man-made – but state government can take a number of steps to keep people out of harm’s way. The state works to keep Washingtonians safe through activities such as incarcerating and supervising criminal offenders; planning for and responding to floods, wildfires, and other disasters; and inspecting workplaces to reduce risk and eliminate unwarranted hazards.

What do we measure?

We measure five main areas to evaluate public safety:

  • Prison Operations (Example: Rate of prison violence)
  • Community Corrections (Example: Number of re-offences by offenders under supervision)
  • Juvenile Corrections (Example: Percentage of homeless juvenile sex offenders)
  • Worker Safety (Example: Number of workplace fatalities)
  • Emergency Management (Example: State preparedness to provide essential emergency services)
